When thinking about selling some of our prized possessions, we often over-estimate their worth, giving way too much value to sentiment and personal attachment. For example, Grandma’s Cherry Dining Hutch – as beautiful as it is, unfortunately, the selling price will be a disappointment … if you can sell it at all.

However, there are categories of items that we may under-estimate, especially if we view them as “out of style” or just old, thinking that nobody will want them.  Here are seven types of items that you may want to research before you put a price tag on them at your next yard sale.

Dish China
Not all china is valuable, but if you have a prized pattern and brand that has kept its value over the years, it could fetch a good price.  Royal Crown Derby China, for instance is a sought-after brand that can bring a good price.  Check with Ebay or a local antique shop.

Depression Glass
Auctions have seen the prices of depression glass go up and down, but it is currently trending up, especially pink depression glass, which is seeing a comeback in recent years.

Vintage Jewelry
Coral and turquoise jewelry and other vintage pieces appeal to millennials.  At auction, even costume jewelry is selling at better than expected prices.

Antique Boxes, Tins, and Fans
Small antique items like wood and tin boxes are attractive to new collectors.  Fans that are in good condition are also considered fun pieces to own as décor.  Putting a few pieces of this type together can intrigue a shopper looking for a hidden treasure.

Fabric
Anyone who sews has a stash of fabric that can be bundled together and sold as a remnant fabric box. The imagination of buyers will dictate how much they will pay for fabric may fit a project they have in mind.

Industrial Metal Table
The industrial inspired design is very much desired by high-end designers and even if it needs some clean up, it can command a good price.

Concert, Play, Movie Posters
If original and in good condition (that’s the key) … and if linen-backed and shrink-wrapped, so much the better. These are highly prized and under-valued by owners.

Trends change and affect pricing and so it is wise to check with online resources, such as Kovels Antiques www.kovels.com or Antiques Roadshow www.antiquesroadshowinsider.com so you know which side of the trend you are on when you decide to sell.
